ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM
Samvad: A Symposium on Securities Market is organised by SEBI and NISM in association with NSE, BSE, NSDL and CDSL. The Symposium is scheduled during January 10-11, 2025 in physical mode at NSE, BKC, Mumbai and will also be telecasted live.
The objective of the Annual Symposium is to foster discussion on the way forward for the Indian Securities Market, by bringing together experts and stakeholders in the ecosystem.

Before being appointed Chief Economic Adviser in January 2022, Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran was a writer, author, teacher and consultant.
He has written a weekly Mint column for fifteen years on Tuesdays since 2007. He has co-authored four books:

– Derivatives
– Can India Grow?
– The Economics of Derivatives
He has taught at several business schools and institutes of management in India and Singapore. He was the Dean of the IFMR Graduate School of Business and a distinguished Visiting Professor of Economics at Krea University.
He was one of the founders of the Aavishkaar Venture Capital Fund and the Takshashila Institution. He has served on the Academic Advisory Board of DAV Schools in Tamil Nadu and the Indian School of Public Policy.He was a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India from 2019 to 2021.
In his corporate career spanning seventeen years from 1994 to 2011, he was a Currency Economist at the Union Bank of Switzerland, Head of Research and Investment Consulting at Credit Suisse Private Banking in Asia, Head of Asia Research and Global Chief Investment Officer at Bank Julius Baer.
He was an independent Director on the Boards of TVS Supply Chain Solutions, Sundaram Fasteners, TVS Sri Chakra Tyres, Delphi TVS and Aparajitha Corporate Services

Mr Suman Bery is currently Vice Chairperson, NITI Aayog, in the rank and status of a Cabinet Minister. An experienced policy economist and research administrator, Mr Bery took over as NITI Aayog Vice Chairperson from 1 May 2022. At the time of his appointment, Mr Bery was a Global Fellow in the Asia Programme of the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars in Washington D.C.; and a non-resident fellow at Bruegel, an economic policy research institution in Brussels. He was also a member of the Board of the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, New Delhi.
From early 2012 till mid-2016, Mr Bery was Royal Dutch Shell’s global Chief Economist based in The Hague. He was also part of the senior leadership of Shell’s global scenarios group.
Before his appointment at Shell, Mr Bery served as Director-General (Chief Executive) of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) in New Delhi. In his decade leading NCAER, Mr Bery was at various times member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council; of India’s Statistical Commission; and of the Reserve Bank of India’s Technical Advisory Committee on Monetary Policy.
Prior to NCAER, Mr Bery was with the World Bank in Washington D.C., which he joined through the Young Professional Programme. His experience on financial sector reform in Latin America led to an appointment as Special Consultant to the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India between 1992 and 1994.
His professional writing includes contributions on the political economy of reform, financial sector and banking reform, and energy trends and policy.

Shri Ashwani Bhatia took charge as Whole Time Member, Securities and Exchange Board of India, in Mumbai on June 01, 2022. Prior to this assignment, Shri Bhatia held the position of Managing Director, State Bank of India.
Shri Bhatia handles the Department of Debt and Hybrid Securities (DDHS), Corporation Finance Investigation Department (CFID), Corporation Finance Department (CFD), General Services Department (GSD), Regional Offices, PQ Cell, RTI, Board Cell and NISM.
Shri Bhatia comes with the experience of over three and a half decades in the State Bank Group where he joined as a Probationary Officer in 1985. Before becoming Managing Director in State Bank of India, Shri Bhatia served as MD & CEO, SBI Funds Management Pvt. Limited.
He has wide experience in Treasury Operations, Retail Banking, Credit, Investment Banking and Asset Management.
Shri Bhatia completed his schooling from Air Force School, Subroto Park, Delhi and did his Graduation in Physics and Mathematics from Dayalbagh University, Agra. He is an MBA from Podar Institute of Management, Jaipur.

Mr. Ananth Narayan is currently a Whole Time Member of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), looking after Market Regulation Department (MRD), Alternative Investment Fund and Foreign Portfolio Investors Department (AFD), Enforcement, Enquiries & Adjudication Department (EAD), Office of Investor Assistance & Education (OIAE), and Department of Economic & Policy Analysis (DEPA).
Prior to this current role, Ananth has had extensive experience of academia, governance, and international banking.
Between 2018 and 2022, Ananth was an Associate Professor at S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR), Mumbai. He also served on several boards, including as Independent Director on SBI Capital Markets, Additional Director (appointed by RBI) on Yes Bank Ltd., Public Interest Director (appointed by SEBI) on NSE Clearing Limited.
Between 2009 and 2017, Ananth was with Standard Chartered Bank, last as Managing Director & Regional Head of Financial Markets, ASEAN and South Asia. Between 2006 & 2009, he was with Deutsche Bank, last as Managing Director, Global Rates, South Asia. Between 1993 & 2005, he was with Citigroup, last as Director, Financial Markets, South Asia.

Mr. Amarjeet Singh, is presently the Whole-time Member at Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). With a career spanning nearly 3 decades with SEBI, he has extensive experience in development, regulation and supervision of securities markets.
Mr. Singh has been instrumental in introducing SEBI’s reforms in both primary and secondary securities markets including areas of Initial Public Offerings, Corporate Governance, Stewardship, Financing Reporting, T+1 Settlement and Risk Management. He has led SEBI’s engagements on sustainability reporting in recent years and also the conceptualization and formation of Social Stock Exchange and its related ecosystem in India.
Mr. Singh is currently a member on the Board of the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA). He has represented SEBI on numerous Committees set up by Reserve Bank of India and Government of India. He was a part-time member on the Board of the National Financial Reporting Authority (2019-2022) and on the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (2019-2023), set up by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. He has also served on the Board of the National Institute of Securities Market.

Shri Kamlesh Chandra Varshney took charge as Whole Time Member, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) in Mumbai on 20th September, 2023. Prior to this assignment he was Joint Secretary (Tax Policy and Legislation) in the Department of Revenue.
Shri Varshney is MBA from IIM, Lucknow and is also a law graduate. He has also worked in Merchant Navy after being trained in T.S.Rajendra.
Shri Varshney is 1990 batch Indian Revenue Service Officer who has worked in various capacities in the Income-tax Department and Finance Ministry. He was the first Commissioner of Advance Pricing Agreement and has a distinction of rolling out APA program successfully in India. He is on the panel of tax experts of UNDP. He has worked for five years with tax administration of Papua New Guinea helping them in investigation and capacity building. Shri Varshney is recipient of the Finance Minister Award for his contribution to Indian Tax policy and Vivad Se Vishwas Scheme. Shri Varshney is a sports enthusiast and loves teaching.
Shri Varshney is handling various departments like Market Intermediaries Regulation and Supervision Department, Legal Affairs Department, Integrated Surveillance Department, Information Technology Department, Recovery & Refund Department and Special Enforcement Cell.

As resource person for UN-APCICT, Dr. Bahl has delivered the security and privacy training module of the Academy of ICT Essentials for government leaders.

Having embarked on his journey in the development sector by living and working for several years among remote forest based tribal communities in the southern Indian district of Mysuru, Dr. R Balasubramaniam (Balu) is a widely respected development activist, leadership trainer, thinker and writer.
He is the Member-HR in the Capacity Building Commission of the Government of India and also the Chairman of the Social Stock Exchange Advisory Committee set up by SEBI.
At the age of 19, he founded the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement based on the principles of Ahimsa, Satya, Seva and Tyaga. He has spent more than three decades of his life in the service of the rural and tribal poor in the forests of India. He is also the Founder of Grassroots Research and Advocacy Movement, a public policy thinktank in India.
Dr Balu embodies a rare blend of grassroots and macro perspectives and policy through his multi-faceted experience of more than three decades. He is a Tata Scholar, a Mason Fellow of the Harvard Kennedy School and a Fellow at the Hauser Center for Civil Society, Harvard University. He is a former Rhodes Professor. He was the Head and Visiting Professor of the Vivekananda Chair, University of Mysore twice.
He is a regular columnist in national dailies and has authored nine books, both in Kannada and English.

Neelkanth Mishra is Chief Economist, Axis Bank. He is also the Head of Global Research and a Whole Time Director of Axis Capital. He has been consistently rated the best analyst in India in investor polls over the years. A highly respected expert and media columnist on global and Indian macroeconomic trends, he joined Axis in May 2023 after a long and distinguished two-decade career at Credit Suisse, where he was Co-Head of Asia Pacific Strategy and the India Strategist. He is a part-time member of the Indian Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council as well as part-time Chairman of UIDAI (Aadhaar) and a part-time member of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). He has also advised government bodies like the India Semiconductor Mission and the 15th & 16th Finance Commission. Dr. Venkatesh Panchapagesan has more than 25 years of experience in academia and in the global financial services industry, after finishing his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Southern California. Prior to joining IIMB in September 2011, he was with the world’s largest hedge fund, Bridgewater Associates, where he led efforts to revamp trading analytical infrastructure. He also worked with Goldman Sachs Asset Management in New York between 2005 and 2008 overseeing trading research for their quantitative hedge funds. Before joining Wall Street, he was a Finance Professor at the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis from 1998 to 2005 and has published in top peer-reviewed global academic and practitioner journals. He was also invited to be the NASDAQ stock market’s visiting economist between 2002-03. Aside from his academic responsibilities, he is also an independent director and consults for a few Indian companies. He has been a member of several government committees and was a member of the Governing Council of CAFRAL, RBI’s research think tank, between 2017-20. He was India’s sole academic representative on the advisory committee for World Economic Forum’s Initiative on Real Estate in 2015-16.

Q2. What are the criteria to get the certificate of participation?
Ans: Registered Participants will be eligible to receive a certificate of participation if they attend the Symposium for a minimum of six hours on a single day. The certificate will be sent to the email id provided during the QR code scanning process at the time of exit. Campus.
Note: SEBI & NISM – Symposium Organising Committee’s decision will be final in case of any query.
